Beanie from last week's Capitol Hill treasure trove. Every week folks toss out all manner of free fabulousness on the sidewalks. How could I resist a Wonder Woman beanie?

There was still a checkpoint and road closure at my block, so I had receive the food staples I ordered for the week at a different location. Counting my blessings!

That pizza I was craving since the insurrection but couldn't get delivered or go pick up because of threats from domestic terrorism? Finally felt safe enough post-Inauguration to go pick up a pizza curbside. I've never been so close to a rifle in my life, and there were a dozen more soldiers outside enjoying a meal al fresco.

Breathtaking. Breathtaking.
HOPE IN CAPITOL HILL Today I witnessed scenes of N HOPE IN CAPITOL HILL Today I witnessed scenes of National Guard troops interacting with locals at the park and its corner coffee shop. One little blue-eyed girl, perhaps awed by so very many very big people in unusual clothes, smiled. A soldier knelt down and asked her name. "Margot," said the mother. "Hello, Margot," said the soldier.
.
I'll never forget that moment.

I knew what I'd come home to, just a few blocks away. The checkpoint. The wall. The scene of horror.
.
Tonight, I peeked outside. The soldiers huddled in the cold, standing guard, engaged in lively conversation. Later, strange hollering at night -- they're doing drills -- I think.

I'm not sure how I feel. I'm still processing the siege. But I do know this -- not every part of DC is militarized -- only the federal city and its perimeters. I also know this -- I live next to a heart that's broken now, that requires healing, and it was all in that little girl's smile, and in the way he knelt before her.
Let's fix this: "Insurrectionists kill." Let's fix this: "Insurrectionists kill."

Disinformation and right-wing conspiracies are spreading faster than ever.

And "de-radicalizers" or "exit counselors" — who specialize in helping people caught up in cultic ideologies to reconnect with reality — are struggling to keep up with demand.
